Toolface
is used by the directional driller while drilling to monitor the bottom
hole assembly in three-dimensional space. It reads sensor data relayed
from the MWD
assembly, WITS or some other third-party sensor. To use this feature,
it is necessary to have the following channels set at the site:
SRV Toolface Azimuth
SRV Toolface Inclination
SRV Toolface Advisory
Quill Position Indicator
(HMI), which is an optional service to track
the rotation of the Top Drive.
Contact Canrig Support Technicians to help set your rig to utilize this feature.
The Parts of the Toolface Component
Toolface Legend: Displays the available toolface symbols and related meanings.
Toolface Mode: Displays the current toolface mode, the rig time and the label for a secondary channel, if any has been selected.
Toolface Label: Displays the current toolface mode, the current angle, rig time and the variable value for a secondary channel, if any has been selected.
Inclination:
Displays the current inclination
of the toolface, the rig time at last reading, and the variable value
for a secondary channel, if any has been selected.
Azimuth: Displays
the current azimuth
of the toolface, the rig time at last reading, and the variable
value for a secondary channel, if any has been selected.
Azimuth Indicator: Graphically
represents the current azimuth
of the toolface.
Magnetic Toolface Readings: Visible when the toolface mode is set to Toolface or Magnetic, these symbols graphically represent the toolface orientation based on magnetic toolface readings.
Gravity Toolface Readings: Visible when the toolface mode is set to Toolface or Gravity, these symbols graphically represent the toolface orientation based on gravitational toolface readings.
Toolface Advisory: Visible only when RigWatch has been configured to send Advisory data, this feature indicates the angle that is needed to reach the next assigned directional target. The area of the advisory indicates the SRV Toolface Limit set in RigWatch.
Quill Positions: Graphically represents the direction of the Top Drive Quill.
Inclination Indicator:
Graphically represents the current
inclination
of the toolface.
Both the Magnetic and Gravitational symbols have a number imprinted upon them that gives an indication of the relative age of each measurement.
In Toolface, the most recent reading is the one closest to the edge of the toolface dial, with older readings stepping toward the middle of the dial. In the example above, the last reading was 4 seconds ago. The other readings show 10, 13, 19, and 25 for a total of 25 seconds of activity. Readings that are hours old will indicate the length of time with an "h."
Positioning your mouse over a symbol will show the symbol's timestamp, as well as the secondary indicator (if any) in a pop-up window.
Note: Timestamps are dependent upon the device settings at the actual time of recording the measurement.
• Toolface symbols the show the change in time from the device recording the measurement and the computer system time.
• Secondary channels set to display a timestamp will show a timestamp according to the device recording the measurement.
To Change Toolface Properties:
Add Toolface like any other dial or gauge. See Add a Screen Overview for more information.
